Jewish Education in Singapore

The Jewish Welfare Board, the organisation that manages the orthodox community in Singapore, has undertaken a number of initiatives to develop an Jewish educational infrastructure in Singapore. Thanks to an open, positive attitude on the part of the Jewish Welfare Board, members of the UHC are welcome to participate in these initiatives. The UHC Steering Committee encourages member families with children to make contact with either Ganenu or Talmud Torah, as they provide excellent opportunities for your children to work on their Jewish education and meet other Jewish children in Singapore. A brief description of Ganenu and Talmud Torah are given below. More detailed information can be found on the Jewish Welfare Board's website ( www.singaporejews.com)

Ganenu Jewish Learning Center

The Ganenu Jewish Learning Center was established in 1996 by Simcha Abergel, an educationalist who gained a D.E.C (Diplome D'etudes Collegiale) in education at the Chaya Mushka Seminary for teachers in Montreal, Canada. Simcha Abergel is the wife of Rabbi Abergel, Rabbi at the Maghain Aboth Synagogue here in Singapore. Ganenu is a Jewish Pre-school with some 45 students and 12 staff.

Talmud Torah Hebrew School

The Talmud Torah Hebrew School makes use of the Ganenu facilities. With the teaching of Jewish Knowledge and Hebrew on Sunday mornings, and Hebrew on Thursday afternoons, Talmud Torah provides the opportunity for children to supplement their secular education with Jewish learning. As Principal of Talmud Torah, Simcha Abergel also has responsibility for this active sunday school.

In addition to the above, the Jewish Welfare Board also organises regular events for children (and families) to celebrate events throughout the Jewish year, including Chanukkah and Purim Parties, Matzah baking at Passover, and building a community Sukkah for Sukkot.
